Award for Australia-India research excellence

The George Institute for Global Health has won the “Excellence in Research and Development between Australia and India” award from the Australia India Business Council (AIBC).

The AIBC was founded 30 years ago to foster bilateral relations between the governments and industries of the two countries. To mark its anniversary, the organisation held the inaugural AIBC Australia Trade and Investment Awards to celebrate and acknowledge organisations that have created long-running, mutually beneficial relationships between Australia and India.

Principal Director of The George Institute, Professor Stephen MacMahon accepted the award at a ceremony in Sydney on 16 May. In his speech, he acknowledged the work of George Institute researchers in the two countries, as well as the National Health and Medical Research Council for their support of the projects.

Chief Operating Officer of The George Institute, Tim Regan, said: “This award is an outstanding honour and speaks to the strength of our research, not only in Australia and India, but around the world. The mission of the George Institute is to improve the health of millions of people worldwide and we are doing just that in India.”

Also nominated for the award were Australia’s Deakin University and educational organisation SEDA Group.

The George Institute has many different research projects happening across Australia, India and other countries, such as SMARTHealth into primary healthcare for resource-poor areas, INORMUS into fractures and injury, and FoodSwitch into healthier shopping and diet.
