
Research Fellow – Kidney Health and NCD research

Context and Role
The Research Fellow will be required to participate in and, manage and lead research projects in the area of non-communicable diseases and multimorbidity, with an initial focus on kidney health. The Institute has a large, diverse and growing program of work in this space. A key role for the RF is to be intimately involved in and eventually leading grant proposals, analyse data (in collaboration with biostatistics team) from existing projects and datasets, write peer-reviewed papers and present at conferences, in addition to providing oversight to existing project(s).
The RF would work with Better Treatments Lead and ED. Over time, the role would involve managing staff, collaborating with other researchers, developing networks with academic and non-academic stakeholders, and communities, seeking ethics and regulatory approvals in addition to achieving time-bound goals.
The individual will also need to develop his/her own reach career in NCD/multimorbidity/ kidney health research and seek funding opportunities to conduct research.
Reporting Relationships
This position directly reports to Lead, Better treatment with a dotted reporting line to Executive Director.
Duties and Key Responsibilities
As a Team Member:
- Be part of the larger team of researchers and contribute intellectually to the development of Institute research program
- Be part of the institute’s research objectives and contribute to other projects wherever possible
- Participate in team meetings and activities relating to the project and own work area;
- Participate in teaching and academic meetings of the institute as indicated by the management and also as per need
- Participate in special projects to improve processes, tools, systems and organisation;
- Contribute actively and in a constructive manner to the smooth conduct of the research projects
- Be responsible for the management of all research staff reporting to the position in a direct or indirect manner, and this would involve project supervisors and field staff
- Be responsible in communicating the need and purpose of the research to all team members in a coherent manner
- Take responsibility for personal learning and development and for setting achievable and meaningful work objectives and managing personal targets, meeting obligations of the Institute’s Performance Management and Development Policy;
- Demonstrate commitment to TGI values, including performing to an exceptionally high ethical standard and focus on integrity, collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.
As a Team Manager:
- Ensure direct reports understand and comply with TGI Policies and procedures, standard operating practices, ethical practice (with respect to research) and the legislative environment.
- Be responsible for managing performance of direct reports, including the completion of plans and agreeing on work and personal objectives and reviewing such plans and objectives, in accordance with TGI Performance Management and Development Policy.
- Act as a role model and ensure the team’s commitment to GI’s values, ensuring direct reports perform to a high ethical standard and focus on integrity, collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.
Work, Health and Safety
- Comply with GI’s Work Health and Safety Policy and related procedures, and similar policies which apply when visiting the premises of affiliates and collaborating sites.
- Promote and contribute to a safe, secure environment for staff and visitors.
- Ensure direct reports understand and comply with safe work practice and procedures
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Qualification
- MBBS, MPH or MBBS, MSc with three years of research experience or MBBS, MSc with fresh PhD or MBBS, MD/Diploma/DNB in clinical or non clinical speaciality
- Experience in managing research projects, leading teams, specific work tasks would be desirable;
- Well versed with scientific reporting guidelines, national and international ethical and regulatory requirements.
- Minimum of four publications in peer reviewed journals, with 2 as first author
- Demonstrated capability to produce outcomes and achieve objectives within agreed time periods;
- Strong problem solving, analytical skills, and proven strategic thinking;
- Demonstrated resourcefulness, with ability to influence others to achieve common goals;
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills and capability of motivating and energising a team to perform at a high level;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with high level of proficiency in English and the ability to work well autonomously;
- Excellent team-work/leadership skills, with demonstrated ability to collaborate in small teams and with a wide range of varying stakeholders;
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility and to be adaptable to changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments;
- Strong focus on producing the highest quality of work and on ensuring optimum accuracy of outputs;
- Well organised and efficient, with the capacity to work under pressure;
