Professor Gordon is the Chair of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Imperial College London and an intensive care consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, based at St Mary’s Hospital.

He is a Director of Research for the UK Intensive Care Society leading its national research activities. He is Chair of the NIHR Critical Care Experimental Medicine group helping to deliver early phase clinical trials in critical care. He is a founding member of the UK Critical Care Research Group that brings together all clinical (medical, nursing and allied health professionals) and academic staff who are interested in critical care research. This group provides a framework for the UK critical care community to come together and collaboratively develop, refine and conduct multi-centre research through peer-review and support.

Professor Gordon’s research interest focuses on translational research in sepsis. He has been an NIHR Clinician Scientist and the Chief Investigator for a number of multi-centre septic shock trials (e.g. VANISH and LeoPARDS). He is a founding member of UK Critical Care Genomics group that undertook one of the first genome-wide association studies in sepsis and is exploring gene expression signatures to identify important subgroups (endotypes) in sepsis. He is now an NIHR Research Professor, leading a multi-disciplinary team investigating personalised medicine in sepsis.
